Operation update
 From 30th August:

RAF and Joint Helicopter Force (Afghanistan) Weekly Ops Update 22-28 Aug 11
Attack
The Kandahar-based Tornado GR4s of 31 Sqn - the Goldstars – were sent throughout Afghanistan this week, delivering close air support as far afield as Herat and Kandahar, but focussing largely on central Helmand, in support of UK troops operating in the region. During one such mission, a Tornado crew were tasked to deliver a show of force near Charbagh, in order to deter insurgents thought to be planting IEDs. The weather was too poor to allow a visual approach, but the crew were able to conduct the operation by using the Tornado’s Terrain Following Radar to descend to low level and deliver the show of force at high speed, dispensing flares as they passed low over the insurgents, who scattered to the satisfaction of the ground commander.
